Combining two of my favourite things – snorkelling and drawing – turned out even better than I imagined. Here I am showing you a bit of the setting, the process and results of my underwater drawing art project. It’s so much fun to see where this drawing-while-floating-in-the-ocean world takes my artwork.
As my underwater drawing project is playful and artistic, there’s more behind it – It’s also a way to feel more connected to the ocean and raise awareness about the underwater world. The ocean covers 70% of the Earth’s surface and is vital for all life on our planet. I hope my underwater art adds something new and meaningful to how we look at art and our connection to nature.

I make drawings on waterproof paper with graphite. I don’t try to make realistic figurative drawings, but rather, I try to capture the essence of what I see. It’s all about catching those impressions, the light, the movements, trying to draw while moving and floating, letting the pencil float on the paper, trying to catch the fish, rocks, reflections, distortions, algae and water plants on paper.

I love that these underwater drawings show the complete experience – including the uncontrolled movements of my hand caused by the water current, the graphite that got soft and dissolved a bit being underwater for quite some time, bits of sand and dust that dried on the paper… For me they show a moment in time and place. A moment that I loved and experience again by looking at the drawings.
These underwater drawings were done on the Canary Island of Lanzarote in June 2024. It’s a continuation of the art project that I started in January 2024. While I was staying as an artist in residence at Hektor on Lanzarote, I also went snorkelling and collected water plants and algae that I then dried and used as inspiration for my drawings and paintings. Mandy from wetnotes.nl inspired me to use the waterproof paper to draw underwater directly. This possibility sparked new ideas and stimulated me to expand my art. To be continued!

TEKENEN ONDER WATER
Met mijn onderwater-tekenproject verken ik een speelse, nieuwe manier van kunst maken. Ik vindt het inspirerend en ook belangrijk om andere leefwerelden te observeren en te leren kennen. Het snorkelen in de oceaan is steeds weer verrassend, prachtig en overweldigend anders dan boven water. Meer dan 80% van de oceaan is nog onbekend terrein voor de mens en wetenschap, het is een enorme onbekende wereld die wij niet kennen.
Ook omvat de oceaan 70% van het aardoppervlak bedekt en is het cruciaal voor al het leven op onze planeet. En toch wordt het ernstig bedreigd door de mens.
Mijn onderwater-tekenproject, en de werken die daaruit voortvloeien, is dan ook een manier om verbondenheid en bewustzijn te creëren voor de onderwaterwereld. Ik hoop dat mijn onderwaterkunst iets nieuws en betekenisvol toevoegt aan de manier waarop we naar kunst en onze verbinding met de natuur kijken.

Ik maak tekeningen op watervast papier met grafiet. Ik probeer geen realistische figuratieve tekeningen te maken, maar eerder de essentie vast te leggen van wat ik zie. Het gaat allemaal om het vangen van de indrukken, het licht, de bewegingen, proberen te tekenen terwijl ik beweeg en zweef, het potlood op het papier laten drijven, proberen de vissen, rotsen, reflecties, vervormingen, algen en waterplanten op papier te vangen.
Deze onderwatertekeningen laten de complete ervaring laten zien – inclusief de ongecontroleerde bewegingen van mijn hand veroorzaakt door de waterstroom, het grafiet dat zacht word en een beetje oplost , stukjes zand en stof die opdrogen op het papier… Voor mij laten ze een moment in tijd en plaats zien. Een geweldige ervaring die ik opnieuw beleef door naar de tekeningen te kijken.
Deze onderwatertekeningen zijn gemaakt op het Canarische eiland Lanzarote in juni 2024. Het is een voortzetting van het kunstproject dat ik in januari 2024 begon. DIBUJANDO BAJO EL AGUA
Me hace mucha ilusión enseñaros el escenario, el proceso y los resultados de mi proyecto artístico de dibujo submarino. Combinar dos de mis cosas favoritas, bucear y dibujar, resultó incluso mejor de lo que imaginaba. Es muy divertido ver adónde me llevará este mundo del dibujo flotando en el océano.
Mi proyecto de dibujo submarino es lúdico y artístico, pero hay algo más detrás: es también una forma de ayudar a la gente a sentirse más conectada con el océano y de concienciar sobre el cuidado del mundo submarino. El océano cubre el 70% de la superficie de la Tierra y es vital para la vida en nuestro planeta. Espero que mi arte submarino aporte algo nuevo y significativo a nuestra forma de ver el arte en nuestra conexión con la naturaleza.
Hago los dibujos en papel resistente al agua con grafito. No intento hacer dibujos figurativos realistas, sino captar la esencia de lo que veo. Se trata de captar esas impresiones, la luz, los movimientos, intentar dibujar mientras me muevo y floto, dejar que el lápiz flote sobre el papel, intentar captar los peces, las rocas, los reflejos, las distorsiones, las algas y las plantas acuáticas sobre el papel.
Me encanta que estos dibujos subacuáticos muestren la experiencia completa, incluidos los movimientos incontrolados de mi mano causados por la corriente de agua, el grafito que se ablandó y se disolvió un poco al estar bajo el agua durante bastante tiempo, trocitos de arena y polvo que se secaron en el papel… Para mí muestran un momento en el tiempo y en un lugar. Un momento que me encantó y que vuelvo a experimentar al mirar los dibujos.

Estos dibujos submarinos fueron realizados en la isla canaria de Lanzarote en junio de 2024. Es una continuación del proyecto artístico que empecé en enero de 2024. Durante mi estancia como artista en residente en Hektor, en Lanzarote, también practiqué snorkel y recogí plantas acuáticas y algas que luego secaba y utilizaba como inspiración para mis dibujos y pinturas. Mandy, de wetnotes.nl, me inspiró para utilizar el papel sumergible para dibujar directamente bajo el agua. Esta posibilidad despertó nuevas ideas y me estimuló a ampliar mi arte. ¡Continuará!
